JULIA NUNES, MUSICIAN

Julia Nunes has impressed everyone from Molly Ringwald to Ben Folds to random YouTube spectators, and she's only 19-years-old. The musician composes original music (her debut album Left Right Wrong just came out), but has become an overnight sensation through her original covers of familiar songs -- which she sonically weaves together in upstate New York. Check out her YouTube videos here , her music (both original and covers) here, and catch her live at the Knitting Factory this coming Saturday. She plays the ukulele and beatboxes...which is all the convincing you should need. more...

PROFILE: JULIA NUNES

While her ukulele gently weeps

She's a YouTube phenomenon. She's a ukulele-wielding smartass and an incredible talent. She's Julia Nunes - and she just woke up.

Fairport native Nunes has been working her 19-year-old butt off lately. She just got back from a handful of dates opening for piano popster Ben Folds, she's in the middle of recording her second album, getting flooded with fan mail, dealing with more than 1 million YouTube hits, and being hounded for autographs. Actress Molly Ringwald just sang her praises in a morning-show interview earlier this week. Consequently she finds herself fielding interviewers' questions at all hours of the day, sometimes in her pajamas. more...

JAAAAAAA

Youtube has, for the most part, replaced my television. And while I have not yet taken the Red Hot Chili Pepper's advice and thrown away the old box, I have allowed myself to move away from the couch and into the rolling chair at an alarming rate. Just about any television you want to see you can find online these days and that suits me just fine. However, more and more I'm also reverting to Youtube to settle those late night 'Ohrenwürmer' with music videos and trashy fan made slideshows. All and all it is a good tool of the internet. more...

10,000 YOUTUBE USERS MIGHT ACTUALLY BE RIGHT//JULIA NUNES

I was really late to jump on the Say Anything train. A friend of mine, maybe a couple of them, put “Alive With the Glory of Love” up on their MySpazz profiles back in the spring of ‘06, and I couldn’t get past the first 30 seconds of it. I thought, A band called “Say Anything” and a song about the glory of love, and an opening that screams of Bowie’s “Let’s Dance.”* 80’s pop culture reference, much? I was pretty turned off, even more so at the over the top second single “Wow, I Can Get Sexual, Too” which, I know, is supposed to be over the top, but it did nothing to change my mind. When, in fall of ‘07, Dave finally came across “Alive With the Glory of Love” and made me listen to all of it, I realized it’s a pretty good song, but left it at that for a few months. more...

THINGS WE ACTUALLY LIKE

My god I'm in love with this young singer. YouTube user Julia Nunes plays the ukulele and harmonizes with herself on covers of pop music by artists including Ben Folds, the Beatles, Weezer, Say Anything, Kanye West and Destiny's Child (she almost made me cry to "Survivor"). Below are those six covers and two of Julia's original songs. Her videos have been featured on YouTube's front page and she's one of the site's most subscribed-to musicians.

AGNES! CANCEL MY APPOINTMENTS!

You're going to need the rest of the day free to enjoy the work of Ms. Julia Nunes (pronounced NOONS).

Where do I begin on how much I adore this young lady? 1) Ukulele 2) Very Messy Dorm Room 3) Destiny's Child 4) Bright Eyes 5) Kanye West 6) Dedicating Songs To Her Dad

I talked to Julia's manager today, who was very nice, and explained that she's working on a new record, and getting ready to tour with Ben Folds! The plan is for us to chat with her when the record's done (if not sooner).

Oh, and here's a huge surprise... thanks to Gawker for the heads up.

JULIA NUNES (OR, WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM A 19-YEAR-OLD?)

So I met this girl at a diner in Vegas at 2am in the morning. Dick & Alayna from Record Archive introduced me to JULIA NUNES, a 19-year-old college freshman from Rochester, NY that is tearing up the internets with her touching, unique, and yes, talented performances on YouTube – so much so, that a lot of her videos have over 100,000 views (including 1.2 million views for a featured original), and not only did she snag an opening slot on an upcoming Ben Folds date, but Ben’s people even invited her to hop on to an additional dozen dates as soon as school lets out this spring! more...
